Bangkok was founded as a small Chinese trading post in a southern bay of the Chao Praya River in the 15th century, with Ayutthaya further north as the kingdom’s capital. The name Bangkok derives from Bahng Gwak, where “bahng” or simply “bang” means “place accessible by waterway” in Thai, for example from a river or canal (“klong” in Thai). “Bang” is known by several names, for example Bangrak, also written Bang Rak, and Bangna. “Gwak”, means “olive tree” in Thai, which becomes “the place of olive trees” or “olive tree plantation”. The G in “Gwak” is pronounced as K, so it becomes “Kwak”
